T.J. Maxx takes the top spot in data loss

TJX Cos is the owner of T.J. Maxx and Marshalls discount stores. They have announced that hackers have stolen upwards of 46 million credit card numbers. The company reported in a March 28, 2007 regulatory filing that approximately 75% of the credit card information was expired.

TJX also has said that personally identifiable inforamation of over 455,000 people has also been stolen. This information includes driver’s license numbers and military identification card information. The company now faces lawsuits around this breach from the federal courts in over 5 jurisdictions. Stolen data relating to sales at TJX stores first took place in 2003 and 2004. Then, computers were hacked in July 2005 and again fomr May 2006 to January 2007. TJX collects driver’s licenses and military identification information in the return of merchandise process. Prior to this event, the honor of having the largest theft of simiilar data belonged to CardSystems Solutions, Inc whom lost the data of 40 million credit cards in 2005.]]>
