Over 500 Medicare subscribers in WellCare Health Plan breach

In late November, WellCare Health Plan sent letters to more than 500 people throughout New York state offering a one-year credit protection plan for specific to a violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.  The director of public relations for WellCare, Crystal Walker, said they learned on November 3 that denial letters were sent to the wrong members due to a 3rd party vendor's computing code error. The denial letters included names, addresses, IDs numbers and descriptions of administrative procedures, evaluations, and radiology reports but no specific diagnosis.

Questions can be directed to WellCare's toll free number (888) 240-4946.
